Andrew Carnegie said that we should never be concerned with how much money we make. Instead we should focus our efforts on providing the best possible service and doing the most we can for those around us. If we give the best we can to as many as possible the wealth will take care of itself.
In a popular 2000 movie a twelve year old comes up with a project for Kevin Spacey’s six grade social studies that he called “paying forward”. Through his efforts people unknown to him would be helped.
The Bible lays out the Golden Rule. “Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back." (Luke 6:36-38 RSV) "So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the Law and the prophets." (Matthew 7:12 RSV)
This is as much a law of nature as gravity. You drop an object and it falls to earth. Give and it will come back far more then you gave.
I don’t understand this anymore than I understand the physics of gravity; nobody does but it is an irrefutable truth. Whatever your job is focus on giving above and beyond your basic job description. Your customers, internal or external should smile when you call or your name is mentioned. If you are unemployed find someone who is in worse shape than you and do something to brighten his day. Don’t just walk or drive past the homeless beggar. Give him ten bucks, a handshake and a word of encouragement. Success, opportunity and eventually wealth will come from sources and directions you never suspected or anticipated.
